A Fundamental Study on Error-Corrective Feedback Movement in a Positioning Task

In this paper, a positioning task that includes translation and rotation is investigated and experimental results of three movement processes (i.e., initial feedforward movement (IFFM), coarse error-corrective feedback movement (coarse EFBM), and fine error-corrective feedback movement (fine EFBM)) are reported for translation and rotation, and for spatially-coupled style and spatially-decoupled style. From the results of all experiments we found quite different tendencies for the three movement processes. For example, the peak velocity for both translation and rotation in the spatially-coupled style was larger than that in the spatially-decoupled. And the time of the IEEM for translation in the spatially-coupled style was shorter than that in the spatially-decoupled. The time of the coarse EFBM for both translation and rotation in the spatially-coupled style was shorter than that in the spatially-decoupled. There was no significant difference between spatially-coupled and spatially-decoupled styles in the fine EFBM. The implications of these findings for user interface design and evaluation are discussed.
